Summary: Post OOTP and PreHBP. After she arrived from Hogwarts, Hermione suddenly finds herself on her own and needing a place to stay. What better option than to go to the friend that needs her support and protection the most. A Hermione meets the Dursley story.
Hermione Granger had a reputation of being a levelheaded young witch. At the moment she was furious, hurt and betrayed. She could not believe what her parents had done to her. They had lied and made her live a lie for almost three years! Both said they had not wanted to hurt her, and that they planned to tell her when she was old enough. Aaarrrggghhh! The gall of those people! What was she, a toddler? By Merlin’s long beard, she was going to be seventeen in September; an adult in the magical world even when in the muggle one she still had a year to go.
Her parents had realized a few years ago that the love was gone, yet they had agreed to be together for her sake. Hogwarts was a blessing for them as they could start living their own lives. It was odd, but both adult Grangers were friends, and their relationship had ended before that friendship was harmed. On Hermione’s second year they got their own pace and kept the house for their daughter. Each had started relationships and Hermione leaving for most of her last two summer breaks had been a reprieve. They had finally divorced and married tot their respective other halves.
Richard and Beth decided they could not keep the deception anymore, Beth was expecting and Richard’s wife –Mary, and who was only twenty two years old- was in the same condition. They had rightly suspected Hermione was not going to take things well; they had lied to her after all. So they had agreed to emancipate her as none expected their daughter would want to live with either of them. They had also set a large amount of money aside for her. Both Grangers came from well off families and were only children, their practice was also prestigious and doing incredibly well. The family was quite wealthy, so they could afford to leave their first child well off.
They had told Hermione as soon as they reached Birmingham and Richard’s home. The old house they had shared had been sold and the profit divided into three. With her part the young witch could buy and furnish a nice flat. Hermione stared at them in shock and disbelief for as long as it took her parents to explain, and she was still in shock as Beth and Mary led her to one of the guest bedrooms. She sat on the bed just staring at the wall until a small flurry owl called her attention and snapped her out of it.
The letter was from Ron, and it was rather a long rant against his mother. He –it seemed- was livid. Mrs. Weasley had decided her children got into too much trouble and dangerous situations. Ron and Ginny were being shipped off to America where one of Molly’s cousins lived. His mother had not said when they were coming back, but he suspected they would not return to the start of term. Ron was asking her to keep Pigwigeon, as he was too small to make the trip over the Atlantic Ocean. His mother’s cousin was a childless widow, and quite wealthy, she was paying for all their expenses. That alone told him his mother was quite set on keeping them away from England. She was proud and would not have accepted before.
Ron told her that against her wishes Fred and George would be joining the Order at the next meeting, that Headquarters were being relocated, and that there were rumors that Fudge and the Wizengamot were going to lower the age restriction for using magic to fifteen. He asked her to keep an eye on Harry. His best friend worried him, there was only so much a person could take, and being with those awful muggles was not going to help him. This comment surprised her; it was too mature for Ron, but he was right. Harry was not well, he had no one and his best friend was being sent away. Suddenly her parents’ deceit did not look like the end of the world anymore. They were still alive, and she was even going to have siblings.
Ron warned her to keep his mother from Harry. She had never approved of Sirius, and that Harry had risked her two youngest children for him had her a bit unhinged. He feared what she might say to him, as he was sure it would not be pretty. Finally he told her he had overheard that Harry’s protection at the muggles was based on blood and his mother’s sacrifice. That was why he had to stay with those people. Perhaps she could find another way to keep him safe and get him out of there. If someone could do it, it would be her. Ron also included a letter for Harry and asked her to forward it.
Hermione had slept little that night, but she now had something to keep her mind off her problems. Harry needed her and she planned on helping him get away from those people. The bright witch had spent most of the night researching in her extensive collection of books. Hogwarts’s library was fascinating, but she wanted to have her own personal library for when she graduated. She had started her collection of books during the summer between first and second year.
The young Gryffindor had started buying rare auctioned books, and collections through Flourish & Blott. Her parents had indulged her hobby; she even had a good amount of Dark Arts books, although she had no plan of telling anyone. Hermione had then bought a special trunk that had a lot of space for her growing collection, although she was running low of space already. She needed to enhance the magic space spell soon. At Hogwarts she had spelled the compartment with librarian charms and spells, they made locating books and doing research so much easier, as well as keeping everything in order and preserving the books in excellent condition.
She had a few books on ‘Blood Magic’. A large part of this type of magic was considered Dark by the Ministry of Magic, although not all. The young Gryffindor hoped to find something that would be helpful in removing her friend from that house. Hermione also took some time to research if her muggle emancipation changed her status in the magical world. To her surprise and delight it did. She only needed to send a copy of the legal documents to a charmed overnight box, and as soon as they were received she gained adult status. Her parents had a few copies of those documents and Beth had left them on the dresser. So she sent pig to deliver them. She knew when the small bird had reached his destination and delivered the copies because her wand glowed and a roll of parchment landed in front of her.
Hermione had only slept a couple of hours when her father woke her up for breakfast. Grumbling she had stood up to take a shower, then downed some ‘Pepper Up’ potion –she always had a stock in her trunk of this and other potions – and the potion to erase the scarring from the curse Dolohov had hit her with at the Ministry. In a week it should be gone. The young teenager dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. Besides researching she had dedicated some time to think what she was going to do, and decided she was too angry and hurt to stay. Besides helping Harry she needed time to process things and forgive them.
“Good morning,” Hermione said entering the kitchen. Everyone was drinking tea, her mother’s new husband –Todd- was talking to her father, while her mother and Mary –who used to be her father’s assistant-, were setting the food on the table.
“Morning sweetheart,” Beth said as the others also joined in greeting her. “Did you sleep well?”
“Not really,” was her curt reply. Sad and worried faces looked at her as she sat.
“I’m sorry t…”
“You should be Dad,” she interrupted frostily. Then she began pouring herself some tea. “You and Mom hurt me, and I’ angry, but I won’t be making a scene.” They all looked ridiculously relieved , and it only made her angrier .
“You will be staying with Robert and Mary then?” Beth asked hopeful. She did not want to loose her first child.
“No, I’m leaving. Harry’s Godfather was killed a week ago before his eye s. He was extremely depressed. I’ll be going to see him and probably get a hotel room in town, or rent a room for the summer. He needs people that care for him close, seeing as his relatives don’t give a damn if he lives or dies .”
“Honey you can stay, surely you exaggerate about these people. They are after all his relatives .” Robert told her.
“No Dad, I’m not exaggerating. These people are abusive, but because of some magical protection that keeps Harry safe from the man that killed his parents, they can’t do anything about it. You and Mom have your own lives, your actions made it quite clear that at the moment my presence is not completely wanted.” She was pleased her voice did not break when she said the last.
“That’s not true Hermione!” Mary affirmed. She and her husband’s child had gotten along very well, they were even friends, but now she saw that maybe she had lost that friendship.
“Isn’t it? They emancipated me Mary; they washed their hands of the responsibility of raising me. If they wanted me they would not have done that .”
“Hermione that’s…” Both adult Grangers cringed and exclaimed. This was not what they meant, and neither of them had stopped to really think what emancipating her would mean to their daughter. Their respective spouses had warned them of this possible problem, but they had been so sure they were doing the best for her that they refused to listen.
“Spare me the apologies and the lecture,” she snapped and glared at them. I don’t want to hear it. Where’s my car?” She had gotten a Toyota Rav4 as a Christmas present and she had gotten her driving papers then.
“In the garage,” Todd offered the child of his wife. He had met her two years ago, but he had been introduced as a good friend even if he wanted Beth to tell the child the truth. He had liked Hermione a lot as they shared a love for knowledge. He was Physics Professor.
“Good,” she stood up. “The keys?” She was too hurt with her parents so she decided to talk only to Todd and Mary. She got the feeling they had been against her emancipation.
“They are hanging on the key perch by the garage’s door. You’re not leaving now are you?” Mary asked looking decidedly distraught.
“But what about breakfast?” Beth asked, and Hermione ignored her.
“Or your things?” Robert asked and was equally ignored.
“Why don’t you stay for breakfast?” Mary inquired and Todd nodded.
“I’m not hungry, could you guys make sure my stuff is stored until I can send for it? That is if I still have anything from home.” Her tone was bitter and no one had ever heard it from her before.
“Of course, we have it stored in the attic. You can come for it whenever you want,” Mary reassured her.
“Just tell me and I’ll help you moving it.” Todd offered sincerely.
“Thank you, Ill just go and catch Crooks so we can leave. I didn’t unpack last night since I was not sure yet of what I would do.”
Getting Crooks back into his carrier was not an easy task, and he was not happy about it. Hermione cast a ‘ locomoting’ charm on the carrier and her trunk then took them to the garage; Pig perched on her shoulder. She put the things in the back of her station wagon and secured them, she had to fold the back seat to make them fit, but she did not want to shrink her trunk so that had to do . The small owl fluttered inside exploring the new place. The young witch then verified that she had everything she needed in her big purse : bank documents, identification card, Driver’s permit, credit and debit cards as well as her checkbook. Those last three her parents had decided to tramit along with her emancipation. Without saying a word to the four adults watching her, she boarded her car and drove off.
