Summary: Light walking vampire Severus Snape, makes a grisly discovery one day in a London alley. A small child is dying and he decides to take with him.
Severus is a Vampire of the Light, a rare clan of vampires that can walk during the day and have learned not to kill humans or wizards for food. They are powerful warriors and posses great magical skills. Snape was born a half vampire, his mother fell in love with one before she was forced to marry Caius Snape, as their marriage had been arranged when she was only a little girl. Isadore Ritter and Walker Summers (the vampire) eloped trying to escape the marriage, but Caius Snape was a Death Eater and with some help they manage to capture Isadore and leave Walker at death’s door. But Isadore was already pregnant (Vampires here can reproduce). Because of the nature of the pregnancy she is protected magically and the child can’t be aborted, nor can be she harmed.
The birth is difficult and Isadore is left barren, the child is Severus and Caius to avoid loosing face before the Dark Lord decides to present the boy as his own, but he hates Severus and Isadore so he mistreats them both almost to the point of death. Severus being born a half vampire is more resistant than a normal child and he suffers a lot at the hands of Caius.
The Blacks (Sirius father in particular) are privy to the information of what Severus is. This is the reason why Sirius hates Snape so much. He always heard his parents talk despectively of him, and he learned to hate the boy at a young age for being a half breed of tainted blood.
Severus is quite powerful magically, but because of his life he rather keeps his strength hidden for when it would be needed. When he is 6 years old, Caius kills his mother in one of his rages; Caius remarries immediately to a pureblooded witch follower of Voldemort. She gives him twin girls but both are squibs which drives Caius to new heights of cruelty. The girls manage to live, with Severus help, despite Caius cruelty. He could have killed them, but the war against Voldemort had already started and it was not convenient to get rid of them yet, though he planned to use them when they were older in one of his Lord’s Dark Revels. Severus and his step mother shared a good relationship; she cared for him a lot after being a victim of Caius for so long. She has also become an undesirable member of the Death Eaters as she produced squibs.
In order to save his little sisters and Moran (Caius second wife) Severus agrees to join the Death Eaters when he is only 16 years old. Because of his sheer genius with potions and his heritage he becomes a very powerful wizard and soon moves high on the ranks of the Death Eaters. But he doesn’t like what he has to do, he doesn’t agree with the torture of muggles, muggleborns and even squibs (because of his sisters and because when he was younger after they were born he came to meet quite a few muggles). He also became a friend of Lily Evans in his 5th year at Hogwarts when she tried to help him when James Potter and Sirius Black were bullying him.
He had called Lily names, mudblood to be exact, and it seemed like they would never become friends, but he later apologized although in the beginning he gave her no explanation as to why he insulted her, Severus later explained that he was forced to join Voldemort if he wanted to keep his sisters and his step mother alive. Though he had some doubts that Caius would keep his word. It was she who convinced him, once he was about to take the mark in his 6th year, to talk to Dumbledore and ask for help.
Severus went to the Headmaster who was at the time leader of the resistance against Voldemort (The Order of the Phoenix). Since he could not escape the Dark Mark, he decided to become a spy for the OotP. Dumbledore promised to protect his family and he did, in fact Dumbledore was aware of Severus true parentage and knew the leader of the Vampires of the Light clan. He would contact him and as the group had become a sort of warriors for hire they could come to an arrangement for the protection of the Snape females.
Walker Summers had taken a few years to completely recover from what the Death Eaters had done to him. He later became the leader of the clans and had managed to keep his people away from Voldemort’s clutches, and they would fight against them surreptitiously. Walker had not known that Isadore was pregnant with his child at the time, but later when Dumbledore contacted him on Severus behalf he found out and was ecstatic. He welcomed Severus and his family into the fold of the volt.
He got to know Severus and they had become good friends as well as family. One day he went to visit his son and found him in terrible condition after the DL had punished him for a failed potion, since Severus was only a half vampire he didn’t have all the powers of recuperation a full one had, though he still was able to endure more than a wizard and heal a bit faster. After taking him back to Hogwarts to be taken care by Madame Pomfrey, they talked about turning him and his sisters into full vampires. With Severus double work he would have a great advantage and better chances of survival. In the girls’ case, Walker had become quite fond of them and they of him. Moran had also returned to being the beautiful woman she had been before her marriage to Caius Snape. She and Walker had become lovers. All four of them accepted to turn.
Three years after the war, Severus was visiting a contact in a shady part of London. He is looking for some rather difficult to find ingredients for an experimental potion. He had not found what he was looking for and was quite angry when he came upon a couple of thugs having his way with a very small child. He can’t, in good conscience, let them maul the little boy.
Harry is almost four years old, social services have been alerted by a new neighbor of the Dursleys that they are abusing a little boy; in order to avoid problems with the authorities the Dursleys abandon a beaten Harry in a disreputable and quite dangerous area of London. Their excuse -that other relatives of the child from overseas have picked him up- is oddly accepted without question, and they get off the charges of child abuse and molestation easily, happy that the brat was probably dead and would never bother them with his freakiness. The boy is attacked by some drug addicts and mortally injured.
Severus disposes of the thugs and goes to the child’s aid. He finds the little boy conscious though too hurt to survive. He is surprised to see those wide emerald eyes regard him calmly even with the pain he must have been suffering. There is also relief and knowledge that he is dying. It shocks the vampire to the core, no child that small should welcome death like that. The boy is having trouble breathing and Severus decides to make him comfortable. It’s when he touches the child that he is jolted by the sheer amount of magical power the boy has, and a strange connection is created. He catches glimpses of the child’s memories and realizes that the boy has been mistreated most of his short life. Something tells him he can’t let the boy die.
“Do you know you’re dying child?” The boy nods. “Do you want it?” another nod. “I can try to save you…”
“No, wanna see Mommy and Dadda… hurt… die no hurt, not bad.” the child weakly whispers.
“I’ll take care of you child, would you like that? No one would hurt you if you make it. Would you like that?” the child was fading fast, but he nodded.
Severus then bent to the boy’s neck and gently bit, almost draining all his blood. Then he bit his wrist, and feed the child his blood. Telling him that he had to want to live that it would hurt just a little but if he wished hard to live the pain would go away and he would take care of him.
Harry did feel pain as he died, as all of those turned into vampires do, and yet his magic did not leave his body, which was a good sign. A few moments later he opened his eyes, still badly injured but Severus knew he had been able to turn the child successfully. He had hoped to see the wounds begin to heal, as it happens whenever someone is turned under those circumstances, but the child’s wounds did not heal. He was alive (undead) but only just so he lost consciousness after a few moments.
The older vampire was confused, the boy should be healing, but then he had never really turned anyone and even his sisters were much older when they were turned, in their teens. Severus in fact did not remember hearing of someone as young as the child he held in his arms being turned. He decided to go to the clan and see one of their healers.
When Severus arrives and the child was taken by a healer, Walker explained that it is rare, though not unheard of, to turn children as young as the one he found (Harry by his size appears to be around two years old instead of almost four). But turned children just as born vampire children developed differently than adults.
Vampire children, turned or born, did not have the stamina or the capacity to heal faster than a normal human or magical child, they did not grow. In the case of born Vampires, both mates would start producing a special kind of blood that would nourish the child, give him the ability to walk in daylight, eat normal foods, grow at the normal rate a human child did and especially the ability to heal at a faster rate. Since a vampire child was always planned, both parents were able to share the responsibility of feeding and caring for the fledging. And the production of that special nourishment for the child was based on the child’s scent; it would stimulate the parents’ bodies to produce what the child needed as well as strengthen the bond between them and their child.
The problem with turned children was that they only had their sire most of the time; the sire must then spend as much time as possible with the child in order for their bodies to be stimulated into producing the first batches of special feed. If the child was too young or too hurt, which was the case of the little boy they usually did not live long enough for the sire to produce what was required to help them heal. Depending on the sire it could take up to a week before his body adapted to the changes. Also, loosing the child could be very stressing to the sire.
“So it was for nothing? Should I have let him just die? No child should have a look like that on their faces.”
“I can’t tell you if it was for nothing son, let the healers asses his condition they will tell you what his chances are, but… in case he does not make it remember I’m here. This little boy is your first turned, loosing any of those you promise life is always painful, but for it to be the first is always difficult.” Then the healer came to the room.
“We have done what we can for the little one, he is surprisingly strong. He is fighting; you should go and stay with him Severus. Narda has cleaned him up, and has him in one of the private rooms. Don’t leave his side, and if possible feed him a few drops of your normal blood every four hours, that would give him some strength if not the ability to heal. It also might force the child’s body to produce the pheromones necessary in greater concentration, forcing your body to react faster too Severus. We will also be providing you with a good supply of blood to feed. I also think that having someone there, muttering encouragement or just simply in contact with him will help and that’s all we can do for now.”
“I’m not that kind of person Rose.”
“You’ll be surprised of the changes once you smell his scent; he is yours to care, to raise, to protect and to love. It is the instinct of the vampire parent and we can’t fight that.”
Severus did as was told and found the child laying on a bed too big for himself. He put some pillows on the child’s side of the bed to keep him from falling if he moved, and he lay beside him. He was already heady with the scent coming off the boy. It created an urge to protect him, to just be close, to do whatever he could to help him live. He lay beside him and gently held him close. Oddly enough for him, Severus found himself carding his fingers through the child’s unruly and now clean hair, nuzzling it to get as much of his scent as he could and whispering encouragement and promises of giving him a better life. In those instants when he had first laid a hand on him, he had been able to see most of the boy’s short life, and it had not been good. He somehow knew those horrible people were not his parents and by the child’s words he guessed his real parents were dead. So he promised to be a parent, that if he fought hard and lived he would have a father that would care for him. He fell asleep with the child in his arms.
It was not until a few hours later that one of the assistants woke him to give the child his first blood drops. It was also feeding time for him and he did not protest to drinking bagged blood, though he much preferred it fresh either from an animal or a human. In this case it was human blood and he guessed it came from some blood bank. Useful things those, a light vampire did not need to hunt humans for their meal. Once both had fed, the child’s vampiric instincts were beginning to show as even unconscious he drank the blood without fuzz, Severus took the time to observe the child better. He was crowned by a messy mop of soft black hair; his eyes he knew were an intense emerald green, he could not be older than two years old because he was really small and so skinny he was almost frail. His skin from what he could see it without bruises was creamy white and the child was actually a pretty kid. In some ways he resembled Severus, so if he lived it would not be too hard to pass him as his own son.
The boy looked a bit flushed and Severus guessed he had a slight fever, so he called for one of the assistants. They brought him a bowl of cool water and a cloth. They could not give him any potions until his little body had finished adapting to the change, if it ever did. So the only thing they could do was lower the temperature with non magical and rudimentary means. It was only when he gently brushed the child’s sweaty bangs that he noticed the scar and froze.
He knew who the child was; he even knew who the parents were. And it was not possible; he was supposed to be safe with his mother’s sister. For a moment he though he might have made a mistake, but the scar in the shape of a lightning bolt was a dead giveaway. He was seeing the son of James and Lily Potter, the child known in the wizarding world as ‘the-boy-who-lived’, the one that defeated Voldemort when he was only one year old.
He called for Walker, his sire, and explained what he had just found out. He needed to get in contact with Albus Dumbledore immediately; they needed to confirm that Harry Potter was still safely at his relatives’ house. There were still many Death Eaters that that had managed to avoid capture by the Ministry of Magic’s Aurors and even those that had managed to evade justice by using their influences or fortunes. Most had sworn to avenge their Master.
Severus, Walker, Dumbledore and a few others believed the Dark Lord had not been vanquished forever, and that he sooner or later would return, so it was imperative for the future of the magical society to keep Harry Potter alive, as they still could not phantom how he managed to survive the ‘Avada Kedavra’ curse. No human had before, although a vampire could, they were after all already dead. Hogwarts Headmaster believed the boy would one day be the one to finally defeat Voldemort.
Walker fire-called Dumbledore and had the old wizard floo to the vampire lair. The headmaster went to see Severus and sadly confirmed that the child was Harry Potter. There was no mistaking that scar. Snape informed him of the odd connection he had felt with the boy when he touched him and the memories he had obtained. He told his friend and employer that it was the memories and those eyes that were too old for a four year old child the ones that convinced him to turn the boy to save his life. The child had wanted to be with his parents because he ‘remembered’ they had cared. He needed someone to care for him.
Dumbledore was sincerely regretting not listening to Minerva McGonagall’s warning that he should not leave the child with those ‘horrible people’. But at least fate had worked in their favor, if the child lived he would have a caring father, who would keep him safe and train him. It was unfortunate that he had to become a vampire but that could not be helped. Along with Walker he developed a plan; they would pass his as Severus son, and change his name.
Light Vampires had their own type of magic and could cover that which normal wizard magic could not. Using a special type of ‘Glamorie’ they would change the scar.
