Summary: Alternate Dimensions. Harry’s mission is finished. He defeated Voldemort and is entitled to happiness; only, he dies when he was not supposed to die. The Fates give him another chance. He can go to an alternate dimension to one of his younger counterparts and have a chance to live again, but… he forgot to ask an important question.
Author’s Note: This is a rather old story bunny I had already in the computer, but had somehow forgotten that it was there. The draft so far has 41 pages and I’m not sure whether I’ll be expanding on this or not.
The war was finally over, and it had taken four years to destroy all the pieces of Voldemort’s soul, and many lives on both sides. Destroying the Horcruxes was both simple and horrifying, as it was the ‘Avada Kedavra’ that had to be used, nothing else worked. To make it even worse only Harry’s provided the desired effect, so he had ‘killed’ a piece of Voldemort’s soul with each ‘Killing Curse’ he cast on the Horcruxes. The last two of them were a problem, as living beings had been turned into those terrible things. One was Nagini, as they suspected. But the other shocked them to their core. It was Harry’s curse scar.
Hermione knew of course, as did Snape. Yes, the same Professor Severus Snape who killed Dumbledore. It came out that while not innocent -he HAD murdered the Headmaster– he did not want to do it, but a servitude bond to Harry -that the Headmaster kept in trust until he was of age- and an Unbreakable Vow –to Narcissa Malfoy- forced him to obey. Snape had practically been Dumbledore’s slave, and the nature of the bond did not allow him to hurt either the keeper of his bond or his Master unless ordered to do so by one of them. Harry would have never ordered him to do so, but the Headmaster was not so scrupulous, and he had ordered the Potions Master to kill him when the time came.
Snape had loved and respected Dumbledore, but that order broke him. He felt betrayed by the one he saw as a father figure. That was what caused him to slip during a Death Eater meeting, and uncovered his position to Voldemort. It had been only ten months after the deed. He escaped by a miracle, but was gravely injured. Snape did recover, but it was only because of Harry’s and Hermione’s help and care. The rest of the Order could not care less if he died, even Molly Weasley did not forgive him.
Things at Headquarters became very tense. It was the only safe place for the wizard, but he was not accepted, and his recovery was slow. Hermione and Harry were puzzled as to why bones that they had healed were re-broken again the next day. The answer was worse than they thought, Ron, Remus, Moody, and a few others were the ones hurting him. The teens could not believe it, and the fight that ensued from that ripped the Order apart. They thought they could convince Harry to keep hating the ‘greasy git’, but they were wrong, and the Order of the Phoenix was left without their saviour, and the phoenix.
Fawkes had returned, in fact, he was the one that rescued Snape. He had spent a lot of time with the injured wizard, and healed what he could only to have the hard headed gits hurt him again. The bird knew there was no one that had been so loyal to his former familiar and he appreciated it. Harry was by then Master of Grimmauld Place number 12 and after the fight locked everybody out. He and Hermione knew they could not remain there long, so they moved to Godric’s Hollow and recast the ‘Fidelius Charm’ with Dobby as the Secret Keeper. Before the charm was cast all the books, potion ingredients, and equipment from Grimmauld Place were moved to the house.
Harry was a powerful wizard, and he managed to place the ‘Fidelius Charm’ not only on the house, but the whole property which was rather large. It was good that he did so because being cooped up in the house would have driven the three of them crazy. Godric’s Hollow was in dire need of repairs to be fully liveable again, so Harry, Hermione, and Dobby had worked hard to restore it. The work gave them both a much needed break from Horcrux hunting.
Severus’ convalescence was long, but the youths were patient, gentle, and surprisingly caring. He slowly learned to care for the two Gryffindors too. Harry never mentioned the bond if he could help it and the Potions Master was grateful for it. He directed their training at first, and once he was able he got into full Professor Mode. Those two would be the best fighters on the light side and thanks to the practice, so would he. Severus set a schedule for research, learning, and looking for the Horcruxes. His Dark Arts knowledge was invaluable in breaking through Voldemort’s protections. It was him that suggested using the ‘Killing Curse’ on the objects to destroy the soul without destroying the Founder’s relics, and it worked perfectly.
Harry’s scar posed a problem. From what they had observed he should suffer no ill effects from casting an ‘Avada Kedavra’ on himself. But that was theoretically, and neither Hermione nor Severus was willing to take the risk even if Harry was all for trying. They both had ordered him not to try, but he was desperate to rid the world of Voldemort. He did it later that night after the other two were asleep. It HURT! And he thought he might die, but the extreme pain passed quickly. The scar remained, but now it was almost completely faded, and he felt so full of magic that it was exhilarating.
The ‘power the Dark Lord did not know about’ made an appearance. It had been Harry’s all along, but Voldemort had been leeching his magic since he was one year old. Hermione and Severus had been furious with him for taking that risk with his life, and it was not because they were worried about ‘the light’s ultimate weapon’ but because they cared for him, Harry, the person. They loved him and did not want him to die. Hermione and he had become lovers, and as for Severus, the Potions Master loved him like if he was his own son. Neither wanted to loose him, and after loud arguments they ended forgiving him.
The final battle took place six months later, once Harry had complete control over his magic. They won, and Voldemort would not be coming back ever again, but neither would Harry. He took a fatal curse protecting his two loved ones. The young wizard did not die immediately, and had time to say goodbye and learn that he was going to be the father of twins. It was a tearful moment, but in the end he found his peace. He would have liked to live after the battle, but had suspected that he would not. Harry would be gone, but Hermione, Severus and now his children would live in a world that would hopefully be much better than the one Harry had lived in. Despite the pain from the curse that was draining his life away, the young wizard’s face was serene, and he died with a small satisfied smile on his face.
