Summary: Sirius was neither as good nor as sane as Harry and the Order thought, and poor Harry was the one to suffer the consequences. He was no longer one, and so he ran away hoping to get the training that she needed. Instead she got to know Severus Snape.

It was him that offered not to register her wand with the Ministry of Magic as Harry would need some practice time to get used to her new wand. Ollivander told her he has sold a wand with a Basilisk’s Life Scale a few years ago. That one was made by the old man’s grandfather and had not been sold for 200 years. It was not registered either, and the owner used it as a back up wand.

The old wand-maker recommended Harry bought another wand in case the Ministry needed to check her wand. It would probably not be as powerful, but would keep her out of trouble. Harry agreed and tried wands while Ollivander selected the wood for the core she brought. After trying for almost an hour Harry got another wand, and it was as rare as the new one the old one was making her. It was 10 ¾ inches cedar wood with a Quetzalcoatl feather –a feathered and flying magical serpent that lived in the south of Mexico and Central America. This was also a very powerful wand, good for just about everything, the same that the Basilisk core one. Her custom made wand ended being 12 inches of Japanese Sacred Tree wood, with the Basilisk’s Life Scale. It was a very strange combination, unlike any Ollivander had previously seen; light and dark working together in one wand.

Harry went back to the Leaky Cauldron, had dinner in her room and after casting a strong ward on the door and a silencing spell, went to sleep. Just after dinner she took a dose of hair growth potion. By morning her hair reached her now very small waist in soft, if messy waves. Using a cutting charm she managed to get some bangs to cover her scar. Then Harry showered, put on one of her dresses and the new shoes with the green robe –they matched- and went down to have breakfast. She went to Gringotts after that to get muggle money and then she headed into muggle London to do some much-needed shopping.

The young witch ended on the East Side district among business people and many fashionable stores. It was not exactly what she had planned. She had thought something more modest would suit her budget, but she had gotten a great exchange rate at Gringotts and seeing the price tags Harry realized she could afford to dress fashionably and even get some extra things that most girls owned. Like jewellery and accessories.

It had been hard to come to term with the fact that he was female now, but Harry had had a few months to think. Of course, she had not expected the concealment charm to wear off so soon. But in a way, Harry felt relieved. He no longer had to pretend to like girls, after the change he no longer did; and as a girls she would never have to submit to Sirius or any other man if she could help it. Sex with her godfather had always been painful no matter the gender, and Harry could not understand what people saw in it.

That day Harry got herself some fashionable clothes –the first ever in his/her life- most were jeans, as she was not completely comfortable with wearing a skirt, and slacks as well as shorts. But she did buy some skirts and dresses. She was female for life and she should get used to dressing like one. Harry also got herself a nice supply of underwear, deciding to get a few more feminine garments that no one else but her was going to see. It also surprised him/her that she even wanted to wear some lacy things, but the fact was she did. They were very pretty and she had never owned pretty things.

The young witch also got new prescription glasses as well as contact lenses. The optician was a young talkative woman that suggested she might want to use some make-up to hide her lightning bolt like scar, and maybe pierce her ears. The latest fashions had some very nice earrings that would complement her looks. To Harry the suggestion was sound, so after she left she went in search of the right place to buy her make up.

She came across a beauty clinic and they had a promotion that interested the teen. If she bought their products she got a basic make up course. Harry did and learned how to conceal her scar perfectly; they even sold the right kind of concealer for that. She decided to add a light sticking and water repelling charm to keep the make up in place for long periods of time. The hairdresser was next, she only had a trim and her messy mane styled, as well as a manicure and pedicure. To which she paid close attention so she could do them herself later.

Harry was a different woman when she went back to the Leaky Cauldron -she had changed into a pair jeans and a pretty emerald green top that enhanced her eyes and wore her contacts- and the male patrons turned to look at her. It was a much different feeling than when people stared at her scar. This time it was really Harry they were seeing and admiring, but she was in no risk of becoming as vain as Lavander or Parvati. The young witch had dinner in the common room, and later just went to sleep as she was incredibly tired.

In a way Harry was avoiding thinking about the events at the Department of Mysteries, Sirius, Dumbledore and the Prophesy by keeping herself busy and tired. She was not sure she could deal with all of that in top of trying to cope with being a girl.

The next day Harry went to Gringotts to exchange some of the pounds she had left, and Griphook –the goblin that was now in charge of her accounts- told her that while she could not access the rest of her money or properties, she could have access to the books. The whole Potter and Black’s libraries belonged to her and were at her disposal if she wanted them. The Black’s Library had been magically removed from number 12 Grimmauld Place the moment her godfather died as it had been deeded to her, unlike the house that had been deeded to Remus J. Lupin. Still everything else save a small amount that was to go to Lupin now belonged to Harry. She thought that was a good idea and would have given Remus a place and money if she had had access to her fortune.

The libraries were extensive, especially the Potters as it was self updating, and would not fit in her normal trunk. Griphook suggested she bought one with compartments that magically adjusted to hold as much as was placed in them. They were expensive –very expensive- but she could afford them with what she had already transferred to her Evans account. After buying a trunk with seven compartments, she had the goblin transfer the libraries to number 6 and 7. She was happy that she would be able to start training and would not need to buy any books. Training was something she could not put aside. Voldemort was after her and if Harry wanted to remain alive she had to be able to defeat that… man.

The rest of the week Harry spent at the Leaky Cauldron learning as much as she could from the books on Defence Against the Dark Arts she found in the Potter Library. She also got a letter from Hermione, but not from Ron. She was puzzled by that until she realized that it was Hedwig who delivered Hermione’s letter, as she was no longer Harry Potter no one could find her. From what her friend wrote, she surmised the Order had not found out the Dursley no longer lived at Privet Drive and that Harry as not there either. The young witch could barely believe what she was reading… and she was supposed to trust those people would be able to protect her and keep her safe? No way in hell and she was relieved to be on her own.

From Hermione, Harry learned that Ron and Ginny had been sent out of the country. Mrs. Weasley had been frantic with worry; she did not want her youngest children to be involved with the war. That also translated to having them involved with Harry. Hermione has no such problem. Her parents were worried, but they were understood that the Wizarding World had become their daughter’s world, and she could no longer go back to being a muggle. It also helped that Hermione had never hidden or minimized the danger she had been into. She told them everything and they trusted her decisions because of that.

Harry debated whether to tell her what had happened or not, and decided to do that in person later. So she just responded she was as well as could be expected, that the Dursleys were ok –which they were since they were not there- and that she had taken to study to pass the time since she was not allowed out of the house. Harry was sure that would please her best friend. She then sent Hedwig deliver the letter. She tried to go back to her studies, but things finally caught up with her and she began crying for what she had lost.

Later that night Tom, the inn keeper, came to check on her. He had gotten used to seeing the young witch at meal times, she was a polite and quiet little things. It was very strange to see such a young woman on her own, and he suspected she was in trouble. He found the girl, Harriet, a mess. The young witch had probably cried her eyes out. Tom immediately called for one of his house-elves to bring some broth and tea to the distraught young woman.

“I’m sorry to be such a bother Sir,” Harry was finally able to say after a sip of her tea.

“Nonsense child; you have been such a quiet client, but also a constant one that I worried when you were not down for dinner tonight. I thought something was wrong, and it seems I was not wrong.”

“It’s nothing,” Harry smiled weakly. “Thank you for your concern.”

“I don’t think it’s nothing Miss Evans. Perhaps I can be of assistance? At least offer a friendly ear.”

“Really I am fine.”

“Very well, but then I suggest you might want to fire-call home child. Sooner or later an Auror is going to send you back to your parents.”

“My parents? You think I ran away?”

“That seems to be your case Miss Evans. It’s not uncommon for the Leaky Cauldron to get its share of runaways,” Tom informed her kindly, and Harry had to admit even she had been there after running away. She measured her next words carefully, as she did not want to tell too many lies and later be caught because of them.

“I’m an orphan Mr. Tom. My parents died when I was young, during the war. I… ah…” It hurt to say it even when she did not love him anymore. “My… guardian, he… he died recently. I have no home and no… family to firecall.”

“I am sorry for your loss child, and please call me Tom.”

“Thanks… Tom.”

“Is there a school friend that you may spend some time with? You should not be on your own at this time.”

“I shouldn’t, but for some of us that’s the only way. I… I am home schooled.” Harry could not risk being linked to Hogwarts were there was no Harriet Evans. “My guardian did not like for me to socialize much.” Which in a way wasn’t a lie, the Dursleys had forbidden Harry to have friends.

“Your situation is quite difficult girl. But still you should not be locked in here alone. It’ll do you no good.”

“I’m not alone, my owl is with me and I’m catching up on my studies.”

“Maybe a job would interest you…” he began.

“I can pay,” Harry interrupted him in a stiff tone.

“That’s not why I said it. You need something to keep you occupied and your mind off sad things. How good are you at doing house-hold chores without magic?” He asked remembering a request from an old friend at the beginning of the week.

“I used to do all the chores at home since I was able to, and with no magic. There were muggles at home.” She responded slowly.

“What about cooking?”

“I was also the one that cooked. Won several pie contests even if my aunt presented them as her own,” she remembered. Harry had been angry with his aunt for taking the credit at first, but ended resigning to it. Being locked in the cupboard for three days with no outings would do that to a person. “Are you offering me a job?”

“Not at the Leaky Cauldron, but an old friend of mine is in need of a house keeper, and someone to take care of him –even if he won’t admit to this- as his house-elf died of old age recently.”

“I see…” The proposal of a job sounded good. She would have a place to stay and getting paid for what she used to do for free would be an interesting change. “How old is this man?”

“He isn’t really that old, he’ll be thirty seven in January. But he’s a scholar and forgets to eat more often than not. He’s also a half-blood, and that’s why he needs someone who can do things the muggle way.”

“So it’s only one person?” Tom nodded. “Is the house very big?”

“No, and it’s located on a muggle area; although it’s a bit set apart from the other houses on the street. He pays well child and is a gentleman through and through. Mr. Prince is very set on propriety.”

“The offer does sound good Tom, but I’ll like to know if he’ll let me keep studying and practicing. I would like to take my NEWTs at one time.”

“I’m sure Mr. Prince won’t mind. But how about I set up an appointment and you talk directly to him?” She nodded as this sounded good.

Tom left the room and fire-called his friend. After talking a bit Mr. Prince agreed to meet Miss Evans the next day at 12:00 pm. He gave Tom directions on how to reach his home by muggle means. Tom then told Harry and she got ready that night to leave early in the morning. Harry also polished her story, deciding to leave names out as much as possible, to invert her parents’ origins and change their names.

James would be Lance Evans –muggleborn that studied in Beaubaxtons. Lily would be Jean Pollux –born from magical parents in France. That should do. Then she talked to Hedwig and explained she had to change her name. as he usually called her Girl, Harry decided that would do for a name as Hedwig responded to it. The snowy owl would fly to Spinner’s End, where Mr. Prince lived, and wait there to know if they were staying.

Early the next morning Harry left the Leaky Cauldron and took the tube to the train station. Tom had told her Mr. Prince disliked gossip, was a bit on the snarky side, spoke little and disliked being questioned. He advised her not to let him intimidate her or he could be a little tyrant. Despite those defects Mr. Patrick Prince was a good man, and could be a very loyal friend. With that information Harry chose to dress a bit conservative, with one of her wizarding dresses that reached below her knees, her simple flat heeled shoes, her hair in a chignon at the nape of her neck, small earrings and very little make-up. She wore her contacts and in her modest handbag –which she felt weird carrying- she had both her trunks just in case.

Mr. Prince lived in the outskirts of Birmingham and the neighbourhood was low middle class. The house was at the very end of Spinner’s End, so the name was fitting. From outside Harry could tell the house was roughly the size of the house she had lived as a boy. But this one had and attic and overgrown gardens surrounded it.

On the way the young witch had noticed the small cluster of stores and businesses which would be good to keep the pantry well supplied. Harry was on time as Tom had warned that Mr. Prince was a punctuality freak. She worried about being able to work for this man, but told herself that if she had survived five years of Snape, she could survive any snarky wizard. So she rang the bell and waited.

A very tall, pale, and thin man opened the house’s door. He wore a simple white long sleeved shirt, jeans that were loose but that told her he had been fitter at one time. His hair was long and black –tied back- his nose was large, and seeing him Harry mentally cursed her luck. Of all the wizards in Britain her future employer had to be Snape.

The job had been too good to be true. For a moment she almost bolted from the place, but caught herself in time. Snape was no fool and would be suspicious, best to remain calm, raise her mental blocks to the highest level, and find a way to refuse the work.

As he approached Snape faltered in his stride as he took in her appearance. Severus almost gaped at the young witch standing outside his garden’s gate. At first sight she was a beauty, a petite little thing; even though Tom told him she was already sixteen. But as he came closer he had to do a double take, she could be Potter’s twin, and that set him on the alert. The dratted boy could have escaped his guards. Although… he could not believe the arrogant brat would resort to dressing as a girl. He would legilimize the child as soon as the opportunity arose.

“I suppose you’re Miss Evans?” He drawled.

“Yes Sir, Harriet Jean Evans. You are Mr. Prince?” Harry managed to respond calmly and raised an inquiring eyebrow at his frown.

“I am. You are punctual ‘Miss Evans’,” he said unlocking the gate and moving to the side to let her in. “Let’s go inside where we can talk.”

He signalled for her to go first and with her walking before him he cast a ‘revelo’. She was not wearing a glamorie. Once inside he indicated the house’s sitting room and offered the young witch to take a seat. Only after she did, did he sit. He observed her in silence that usually had his students squirming, but she only observed him back. That’s when he tried to legilimize the girl only to bounce back from the strongest shield he had encountered so far.

“Where you not taught to respect other people’s privacy?” Harry asked icily.

“Potter what are you up to?”

“Potter?” Harry hoped her act was good. Snape glared at her. “Oh! You mean the ‘Harry Potter’? I’ve been told I look a lot like him. Some people say almost like a twin, but I’m not the-boy-who-lived. Do you know him?”

“He is my student, a lazy, arrogant and idiotic boy.” He did not really believe her, but… the occlumency made him doubt. Potter had been useless at it… or was he really?

“Oh… that’s not what Witch Weekly says.”

“Those imbeciles only pander to the brat’s ego, and add to his fan club.” He hoped for a reaction, but none came.

“I take it you don’t like him,” she said, “but I’m not here to talk about him. You need a house-keeper and… Tom said I needed something to keep me occupied.”

“Tom mentioned your guardian died recently.”

“He…” Harry swallowed hard. “He did, a month ago.”

“You must have loved him very much.” This was too much coincidence although Black died two weeks ago. But her reaction was not what he expected, as several emotions coursed through her face –much like they did through Potter’s face- but settled on pain and hate before becoming blank.

“I used to yes,” Harry told him flatly.

“Do you have any other family?” Severus inquired.

“An Uncle and his family,” She replied curtly. “They were deemed unsuitable guardians and I went to live with my last guardian. Not that it was any better.” The last was mumbled bitterly and was not for Snape’s ears, but he heard anyway. “I’m better on my own than with my Uncle.”

“I see…” Severus replied thoughtfully. If the child was indeed Potter, then Black must have done something really bad for the Gryffindor to hate him so much. If she was not then someone hurt this child very much.

Severus decided to continue the interview and began describing her duties. She was to keep the house clean, the pantry stocked, cook the meals, do the laundry and iron his clothes. She would also mend them – should it be needed- and do the shopping should she wish it as the stores did home delivery. It was not necessary for her to work in the garden unless she wanted too. They discussed what he liked or didn’t like to eat, and surprisingly –at least for Harry- he ate everything, but had a sweet tooth that he seldom indulged. He also had been eating little lately, so she should not cook too much.

Harry noticed as they talked that Snape looked exhausted, ill -and paler than usual with dark circles under his eyes- in pain and his hands shook involuntarily. Those were usually caused by the ‘Cruciatus’ curse; too much exposure to it. As she observed him, Harry noticed something like worry and desperation in his eyes and also that it was slipping through his usually inscrutable mask. She began to suspect that being a spy was really putting too much of a strain on the Potions Master, and sooner or later he would crack and get himself tortured then killed.

No one really appreciated the job this man was doing for the Order, and that included her. He was killing himself to protect her, even when he disliked Harry Potter so much. She felt bad and her ‘saving-people-thing’ took over. Snape needed to be taken care off, needed someone to care over his well being. Harry could do that, and she promised herself to make sure he ate and rested.

Would I be able to adapt the idea behind this? It’s an interesting idea, and I would love to be able to expand on it. ^^

Hi TiannaMVA,
I’m glad you like the idea. You can use the idea behind the story if you wish, but if you want to use any parts of the story I would request that you give me the credit for those parts that you use, as well as send me a link. I would love to read what you make out of this plot bunny.

Right now the story has changed a a bit from what it was in the original draft. Some I have already posted, but not all, I’m working on getting all that I have written about this and other plot bunnies ready to post. Although I’m not sure when they’ll be up.
