Disclaimer: Nope, doesn’t belong to me. I only play with them a bit.
Summary: There were things that Harry had forgotten that happened the summer before his fifth year at Hogwarts. He remembers now, and it added to his pain and loss, but he also found family and a reason to keep on fighting.
“After being subjected to five minutes long ‘cruciatus’ continually for the Gods only know how long? Severus I still don’t know how it is that you are sane and alive… you where a mess when I found you.”
“I wasn’t sane when you found me… nor was I sane for some time afterwards. I really died that day with them. You and Albus are the only ones that ever bothered to be close to me Nai, and now I’m going to loose you too.” He whispered softly, deep sorrow showing in his expressive baritone voice. “So why shouldn’t I whish to be with those few that I loved and actually cared about me?” He had moved and was kneeling beside the recliner, closer to his sister in law.
“Because I love you my little brother, as I’m sure my children will do. I even believe Harry will get to care for you if you let him see the real you. I don’t want you to die before your time, bitter and alone. My twin wouldn’t want that either.” She paused thoughtfully, this was probably the most she had ever gotten out of her brother in law, but she had suspected he felt that way. Well, he needed a new purpose in life, something to live for, just like her naleam, and she was going to give him one. “Severus, little brother, my children -your talens- need their only uncle to be by their side, to love them and protect them. Your new talete needs you as well. I know you don’t get along, to put it mildly, but you’re family now and you have the twins and some experiences in common. I firmly believe you can overcome those misunderstandings that caused the problem to start.” Naiya paused again, this time to give Severus a bit of time to assimilate what she told him. “Now, what I’m going to tell you must be kept secret, just like the existence of Lubowen. Would you bind yourself with the secrecy spell?” Her last words surprised him.
The secrecy spell was a part of the Daramy Ritual that ensured the Lubowen existence was kept quiet. It was also performed outside the Ritual when there were things that should not be revealed, usually when members of other races had to learn for one reason or other about the existence of the Lubowen. The spell had various forms, so it could be modified depending on the requirement. When it was about the Lubowen, it recognized others under the same form of the spell, and they could speak about the elusive elves among themselves. Usually the one with the information was the one to cast it, but Severus soon realized that Naiya probably would not be able to. It was rare that a family member requested it, but he would not deny anything to Naiya. He would even hug the Potter brat if she asked him to, of course he would not agree without a fight.
“I will,” without preamble, he placed his palms together in a prayer like fashion. Then he began muttering some incantations in the elven dialect of the Lubowen. His hands slowly began glowing with a soft orange glow that slowly surrounded him. He slowly separated his hands and the glow gathered evenly in each palm. Once all was there, Severus closed them again trapping the orange light between his hands. He pressed the tips of his still together hands first to his forehead, then his lips and lastly his heart before he stopped his incantations. “It’s done Nai; you can speak freely to me now.”
“I’m sure you remember the Prophesy the Dark Lord was looking for most of the previous year as well as this one?”
“I do, but it was destroyed in that fiasco at the Department of Mysteries.” He frowned, why was she bringing this up?
“It was, but Dumbledore knew all along what it said. He witnessed it…”
“That sly old coot!”
lang=EN-US> Severus muttered. It was so like Dumbledore to keep something like that quiet.
“To make it short, Harry’s destiny is to fight the Dark Lord, one must kill the other and there is no way around it. Voldemort himself chose Harry and marked him as his equal, as there was another child that fit the same requirements. Born as the seventh month dies, which is July 31st from parents that have thrice defied him. Harry birthday is that date, and well, what can I say about that scar?”
“Surely you’re mistaken; it can’t be that way… Potter is no match for the Dark Lord, the boy is too irresponsible and… at best mediocre. There’s no way he can be the Dark Lord’s equal.”
“But he is Severus; he’s also very powerful and whatever you think, if there’s one thing Harry is not, is irresponsible.”
class=SpellE>Nai, you can’t tell me that. Knowing how important it was to learn Occlumency because of his scar’s connection to the Dark Lord he did not even try!”
“He did not know Severus…” She told him softly. Sometimes he was too blinded by Dumbledore to notice that he was just a man and he made mistakes. Her naleam’s fifth year was a prime example; the old wizard made one mistake after another until it resulted on Black’s death.
“Come on Nai, Dumbledore must have explained it to the boy. He would not leave ‘Gryffindor’s-Golden-Boy’ in the dark about something as vitally important as the danger of false visions or being possessed by…
class=GramE>Him.” Severus argued, although if he was truthful with himself Potter had seemed not to have a clue about anything during the Occlumency lessons. He also could not remember if he ever saw a happy memory. He did know that he would not have been able to locate the memories hidden by not completing the Daramy Ritual.
“But he did just that Severus. Dumbledore never told him why he needed to learn occlumency, never told him the dangers, and he swore other people to secrecy. You know my Daramee can’t lie to me, especially not during the knowledge transfer. Harry was already getting paranoid because of the unfinished Ritual; you can imagine what kind of stress he was in knowing people were keeping things from him, and there was no one he could talk to about what he saw.”
“Damn the old man! No wonder the boy did abysmally if he was not aware of why and what he was supposed to do! Albus told me he had informed and explained things to the boy. I assumed he had explained the basics…”
“He didn’t, and Harry had no way of knowing what to do. Most wizarding families teach their children ways to meditate or at least how to sense their own magic. It’s very rare for a muggleborn to know that kind of thing, unless their parents belong to either the oriental cultures or are into what’s been called the New Age movement. There are not many who are. You told Harry to clear his mind, but never told him how.”
“Merlin,” he exclaimed softly. Of course the boy had been reluctant to take the lesson; his attacks must have been really painful and shocking. They probably added to the sense of paranoia Potter had. He might have caused irreparable damage to the brat’s mental defences. “It never occurred to me that he would not know how to clear his mind, it’s… well something so… basic.”
“For pure-blooded families, but it’s not something others know. I learned this a few years back. Thankfully no damage was done.”
“I could have done irreparable damage. No wonder the other Professors commented on his behaviour, they thought that there was some sort of drastic change… I think Minerva said he was angry, irritable and prone to snap at everyone most of the year. She thought this was odd but I… well you were right I only saw his father so can’t really say what the boy’s normal
class=SpellE>behaviour is, and what is not.”
“But you didn’t and that’s what matters. You didn’t know Severus, although you should have asked and he should have told you he did not know,” she sighed and changed the subject slightly. “It is indeed very strange behaviour for Harry. He is mild tempered most of the time, unless Draco Malfoy is involved, and even then he is not the one to start any problems. He prefers to fade in the background, although he is rarely allowed to do so.”
“Ah yes, Mr. Malfoy has a tendency to do whatever he cans to get on Potter’s and the rest of the Golden Trio’s nerves. Unfortunately I can’t do much about it even if I know that at least in my classroom it is usually Mr. Malfoy who starts everything. Reprimanding him for doing anything against Gryffindors will reach the Dark Lord’s ears the same day. It might lead them to question my loyalties. Also, when Mr. Malfoy doesn’t start the hostilities it’s the Weasley brat. That boy is the worse influence your Daramee could have…”
“But he is his best friend; you’re just prejudiced against Weasleys.” Naiya defended her naleam’s friendship, though she had some misgivings about the boy.
“No, I’m not prejudiced against Weasleys. They are overall a good family and good people. In private, where I don’t have to pretend for spying sake, I actually get along fine with the elder sons. The twins and I have a… business deal, so you can say I also have good relations with them. We just can’t let the act drop in public, it isn’t safe for me. The only two who don’t fit in, in that family are Percival and Ronald. The later is more traitorous than they believe; Potter is too naïve at times to notice that boy is extremely jealous of him and what he has. He wants fame, money and recognition but he is not willing to work for it. So mark my words Naiya, if your naleam is not careful Ronald Weasley is going to betray him again and this time he is going to cause serious trouble.”
“I don’t think he will listen to anything anyone says against Ron, Severus,” she said with a sigh. “Not even to me, and well… from what I gathered from his memories, I do have some reservations. But Ron was the first real friend his age that Harry ever had, it’s going to be hard to beat that.”
“That’s too bad Nai, but well he must learn to be more observant, and since I know you’re going to ask, yes I’ll keep an eye on Potter and the Weasley brat. I’ll do what I can, been doing that since he first set foot at Hogwarts anyway.”
“Thank you Severus.” She smiled gratefully at him. “Now, going back to Dumbledore; your Headmaster avoided him most of the previous school year. Things would have been completely different if Harry had known of the dangers of what the Dark Lord was capable of doing. Harry is not stupid, and he is more sensible than people give him credit for. He also has a good head on his shoulders. But most importantly, if he had known what it was that He wanted, my Daramee would not have gone to the Department of Mysteries.”
“I suppose he now knows what Dumbledore was keeping from him, since you know of the Prophesy. Although you have not told me all of it, and that was the reason why he trashed the Headmaster’s office that night. With what you have told me I can’t say that I blame him. I would have probably cursed Albus into next year, instead of just destroying all that useless paraphernalia he keeps around.”
“He knows of course, but I don’t think Dumbledore told him all. If you want to know what the Prophecy says, ask Harry sometime, he might tell it to you. Severus, I know the old man cares for my Daramee, but… he has to look at the big picture. I frankly don’t trust him to keep Harry’s best interest as his first priority… Please for me, look after Harry and our children. Help him control his new powers; teach him that which he needs to know to defeat the Dark Lord. Only he can, and when he does, you’ll have avenged my twin and my talen’s murders.” Her talete was quiet for a long time and she feared that he would refuse.
“I will honour the filial bonds Naiya; you have my wizard’s word on that,” Severus reassured her. He did know it was his duty to his little niece and nephew to be there for them. Also the Lubowen family instinct would demand that he become part of the twins’ life. The Gryffindor had also become a brother the moment he performed the second step of the Daramy Ritual, Severus would not be able to ignore him, just as he knew the boy was also bound to him as family. “The rest will depend on Potter.”
Harry had not been able to stay away from Naiya, nor where his children. They were restless most of the way to the shopping centre, as if they knew something was wrong. Petunia had noticed this, and understood that her nephew needed to be with his wife or at least in her vicinity for as long as he was able; and the children were probably picking on his mood through the connection they shared. She suggested they go back to the house, and she would return to the shopping centre and buy some change of clothes for him.
Harry had readily agreed. He understood Naiya’s need for privacy when dealing with her talete, after all she knew the man well, and if he cared for her just a fraction of what she cared for him, he was sure that whoever he was would not take the news calmly. He was making his way to the stairs as noiselessly as possible –thankfully the children had finally taken a nap- when he heard a familiar voice coming from the sitting room. For a moment he froze, and rage filled him. Though he no longer completely blamed Snape for Sirius death and last term’s fiasco, he was still angry and had never really liked the man to start with. Especially because of the way he treated him for five years.
The teen was about to charge in the room and demand that Snape leave his house and his family when he looked at his children sleeping peacefully in their pram. Seeing them helped Harry calm himself and think things through instead of going all Gryffindor. He really was not like that, but he supposed five years of Ron’s company and having to pretend to be someone he was not completely did have more effect on his behaviour than he thought. Instead of going in, he moved closer and listened to their conversation; and was surprised to see a whole new side to the greasy git.
Snape cared for Naiya very much, it was as clear as water, by the way he toned his voice and the fact that he tolerated from her what would have resulted in loss of limb or life if someone else dared to speak to him like that. Just listening to their conversation, he became aware that there was so much more to Severus Snape Potions Master and ‘greasy git’ than he thought possible. The man had feelings, and Harry could identify with his loss.
Naiya was going to die, he would loose her, but the twins would be there with him. The thought of loosing all three of them was almost unbearable. Knowing that his own father has killed his son and mate was probably enough to drive someone crazy, from what he heard Snape did go crazy for a while. The more he heard, the harder it was to keep the level of dislike he had felt for the man. He was also able to understand what had gone so wrong with his occlumency lessons last term, besides breaching Snape’s privacy. He supposed the memories from his Daram and son were also in the pensieve.
Harry did not like what Snape implied about Ron, and for a moment he was very tempted to burst into the room to defend his best mate. It was Naiya’s comment, agreeing with the Potions Master that stopped him dead on his tracks and made him think. He could actually feel through their bond his Daram’s concern, she really believed Ron was capable of betraying him and worried because of it. Truth be told, Harry could not be completely sure that the red-head would remain by his side. Ron had left him before, and he certainly acted like a git whenever Harry’s money and/or fame were mentioned. He would have to keep an eye on his best friend. Besides despite not liking him, Snape had saved his life before and tried to protect him.
Well, want it or not, Snape was family now. He did have the right to get to know his talens. He was also about to loose the only remaining link to his little family, which would be quite painful. The Potions Master was also offering a truce by agreeing to honour the filial bonds, and Harry could not refuse it. There were also some benefits of having the wizard as family. His loyalties were first to his family just as Harry’s were now. The Potions Master would never put the children in danger, would protect them with his life if necessary. If something happened to Harry, he could trust that because of the filial bonds Snape would take care of the twins. His Daram also loved him as a brother very much, the teen could feel it. It was very important for Naiya that they get along, for her and his children he would do his best to do that.
“It does not completely depend on me Professor Snape,” Harry said as he entered the sitting room pushing the pram with his children. He left them near the entrance and walked to the couch where his Daram sat, then kissed her gently. It was not like him to show any type of affection in public, but he had decided that Snape was family and so he did not count as public.
“Harry, I thought you’ll be away longer.” Harry looked at her, then at Snape before he spoke.
“I couldn’t Naiya. We… the twins and I, needed to be here.” He caressed her cheek affectionately.
“I… think it’s time for me to leave Nai,” Severus said not wanting a confrontation with Potter –they had never been able to be in the same place without starting one. With Naiya so weak, it would not be good for her. She looked crestfallen at his words and both males noticed it. After a moment of thought Harry spoke.
“You and I never saw eye to eye before Professor, and I was not the one who started the hostilities. I only retaliated when you attacked me or my friends. But… you’re Nai’s family and now part of my own. From what I can tell, you care for her as much as she cares for you… do stay and finish your conversation, and… perhaps you can meet your talens afterwards.” He could see Snape was clearly not expecting this from him, and looked both surprised and relieved.
“Thank you Potter…” he began.
“Harry, call me Harry. You are my talete by bond… there’s no need to be formal among family. Just as you agreed to honour the bonds, so will I for Nai’s and my children’s sake.”
“Then you can call me Severus, Harry. Although at Hogwarts it might not be possible.”
“I understand Severus, I’m your student after all, and then there are the appearances you have to keep with the Death Eater children. Now if you’ll excuse me I’ll put Rhiannon and Kheelan in their cribs.” With that he left and went upstairs with his children, leaving a rather amazed Professor.
“I can’t believe that was the same boy from school.” Severus mused, he did not think he had ever seen Potter behave like that, much more mature than a boy his age was.
“He basically is Severus. I told you he was more mature that you thought, but since this –surprisingly enough- is not expected of ‘the-boy-who-lived’ then he really does not let many people know about it. Will you be civil to him?”
“Yes, Nai for you and my talens I will be. I’ll also train him if he agrees.”
“What about Dumbledore?”
“I’ll do my best there, but I need some time to work things out. I might need to tell Albus about the Lubowen. Do you think the Council of Elders would approve?”
“I have the odd feeling that Dumbledore already knows about us, although he might not know you were mated to a Lubowen. You can also tell the Elders about the Prophesy if they agree to the secrecy spell. They might have to get involved in this war directly, unlike the one against Grindelwald and the first against the Dark Lord. You should also see if they can remove that ugly mark you have on your arm.”
“You know that I shouldn’t; now that I know of the twins and Po… Harry, I must keep my spying duties,” he told her softly, knowing that she would prefer he stopped spying. But he would not, not when there were members of his new family at risk. The information he gathered might be crucial to keeping his young talete alive.
“Then promise me that the moment you suspect they are unto you, you’ll leave His service. You are no longer alone Severus, there are others that need you alive.” He took some time but in the end agreed.
“I will Naiya, and I’ll also remove the Dark Mark from my arm. Amaraya began researching a potion to do just that… she died before she could finish it. But I kept working on it; I just did not use it once it was finished because I knew he was going to come back, and I would need to infiltrate his ranks again.”
They spent some time after that reminiscing until lunch time came. One of the house-elves informed them that it was ready and set the table for them. Severus hesitated to accept Naiya’s invitation, he hand Potter had drawn a truce, but he did not want to impose his presence and end in an argument. Naiya finally convinced him to stay, and Harry true to his word respected the truce. The conversation over lunch was stilted and uncomfortable at times, but the Lubowen managed to keep it flowing, by directing the subject to the powers a Daramee obtained during the Ritual.
After lunch the Potions Master had the chance to see and carry both his talens, and Harry could not help but be surprised at the ease with which he handled both infants. That was not something anyone, especially a student, would associate with their Potions Professor. Both Kheelan and Rhiannon managed the impossible and made the sour man smile, he even softened that impressive voice of his to a special tone for the twins.
With both Harry and Naiya watching he performed the part of the ritual that bonded the children to him as their talete. It made him part of the family before the eyes of the Lubowen Council of Elders. Then the teen performed the other part where he accepted the man as his brother in law. Once the small rituals were complete their family structure was finally official, Petunia was added a little after the twins birth.
Severus stayed part of the afternoon with the twins and getting to see a part of Harry Potter that he suspected no one but Naiya had seen before. The boy could be very loving and caring with his children and his Daram. He was also very attentive and did not let her exert herself at all, not that Snape allowed her to do it either. She needed to conserve her strength. It was while sitting with them that the Potions Master realized they needed to fulfil some formalities for their bond otherwise the Ministry might not allow Potter to keep the children since he would be considered a minor.
Snape mentioned this to them and together they planned to get it legalized as soon as possible, before Naiya was too weak to leave the bed. Severus had many contacts in several key places in the Ministry. One such contact had been the one to legalize his union to Amaraya all those years ago. He still worked in the same department of the Ministry. A quick firecall and they were talking to Burton Montgomery.
lang=EN-US> listened to their problem and agreed to perform the legalizing spells for them and keep the union under wraps. He would also report the birth of the twins as result of the bond. It was after all a private affair and no one besides themselves needed to know about it. He flooed to Trenton House and in less than twenty minutes had the paperwork and spells done. He did recommend that it would be good if wedding bands with the proper protection and well wishing spelled to them were exchanged. They agreed and both Severus and Harry –wearing a Lubowen glamorie- would floo first to Gringotts to see if there was something of the sort in the Potter vault and if not they would buy them.
At Gringotts the next day Harry found out that he had more than one vault to his name and that they had been in Albus Dumbledore’s control until he was fourteen. The Headmaster should have given him his keys to the vaults that held all that belonged to the Potter family. There was also the vaults for the Black family, of which he had been the sole heir the moment Mrs. Black passed away. Sirius had been disowned when he refused to become a Death Eater and instead ended an Auror. Since Regulus Black, Sirius brother- was dead, Mrs. Black was forced to make a concession and accept her wayward son’s heir as her own. She had no wish of letting either Narcissa or Bellatrix to have access to her fortune.
