Summary: There were things that Harry had forgotten that happened the summer before his fifth year at Hogwarts. He remembers now, and it added to his pain and loss, but he also found family and a reason to keep on fighting.
“You really don’t look good love,” Harry told his naleame when he noticed that the short walk to his room had left her exhausted. He helped her lie down on the bed and using Lubowen magic he summoned several fluffy pillows and large cushions. He was glad this type of magic was not registered by the Ministry or he would be in deep trouble. “And you did not answer my questions before you asked me to name the children. Are you ill?” Concern filled his voice.
“I am Harry. I have Batlosh disease,” she said and waited for him to find in his mind what it was, and saw his face change from concern to desperation as he found it.
“NO! No, that’s not true Naiya. You can’t have that, please no. Tell me it’s not true please, please…” he pleaded his voice full of anguish, his face desperate. Her heart broke with his, and the Lubowen held him close to her.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…” she whispered in his ear like a litany.
“We’ll go to
class=SpellE>Ubow City; the healers will know what to do.” He said disentangling himself from her and going to his trunk to get some clothes. “Come on Naiya, get dressed. We’ll take the children, although Aunt Petunia might not mind baby-sitting for a while. She seems to like Rhiannon and Kheelan more that she did me.”
“Come on Naiya,” he was already half dressed. When he saw she was not moving he began looking for her clothes. “Here,” he said handing her what he collected from the floor.
“Harry stop this,” her voice sounded so full of pain and tired.
“We can’t waste time Naiya… I’ve never created a portal but I think I can manage…”
“Harry please… you know what Batlosh disease does. You also know there is no cure…” Naiya hated herself for lying to him, although the disease and her condition were remarkably similar. But letting him know that carrying his children was the reason she was dying would be worse for him. Her naleam did not need to carry more guilt, it would kill him.
“But there are potions that will help; you can’t just give up yet…” He objected, still refusing to believe she was going to leave him too.
“It’s too late for that naleam; it’s been too late for several months…” her hand gently traced his cheek and rested them as she went on; her voice breaking. “I don’t want to leave you Harry, believe me beloved
class=GramE>that’s the last thing I want, but there is nothing I can do…” she finally sobbed letting her feelings flow. “I did not want you to remember me so you would not suffer through this. But… the twins would have been left alone with no one from my clan except my talete; he was my twin’s Daramee and he is a wizard too. I know he would take them and raise them as his own, but the children still have another parent left. They need you, just as I know you need them.”
“Naiya… there must be something… anything we can do,”
“No love, my time is short and… and there are still things that need to be done, so I can leave knowing that the five of you –Petunia included- are well protected and provided for.”
“Don’t do this to me Nai, not now,” he whispered sitting besides his mate and looking at her with pleading eyes. “Not now, not after I just lost Sirius…”
“I can’t stop it, can’t fight it… there is no cure. We have so little time… probably no more than a week…”
“No,” he cried. “Merlin no! It’s not fair… it’s not fair! I can’t loose you too…” Harry sobbed and clung to her with desperation. “Please Naiya don’t leave me, please. I can’t bear to loose you too, not now, not when everything is going to hell. I just can’t.” The last was a defeated whimper.
“You can bear it Harry, and you will. You have Rhiannon and Kheelan now, they need you. Fight and live for them Harry, find the strength you need to go on in them.”
“But they aren’t safe with me Naiya, not with Voldemort wanting to kill me,” he told her desperately.
“Listen to me my naleam. The will be safe, you now have powers that evil wizard does not know about. I gave you the knowledge to protect the little ones, the magic of my people. You are stronger than he is, learn to control and use your magic, practice and train in the arts of war, and you will defeat your enemy. My talete will help you; he is bound to you and the children through the Daramy. He is also very powerful and I’m sure he will train you and fight alongside you to protect his talens (general term to denote niece and nephew). You also have now so much to live for and something he would never comprehend, which is love.”
They spent the rest of the day together, talking, crying, kissing and making the best of what little time together they had left. It was hard for the teen to come to terms with the fact that he was going to loose her in a few days, and in fact, he had not done so completely. But she helped him the best that she could, and being able to feel the twins kept him grounded. The little ones needed him, they were already going to loose one parent, and they could not afford to loose the other. He knew what being an orphan was, and he did not want them to have to ever experience it. Harry worried that he would not be a good father as he really had no idea how to go about it, but Naiya reassured him that she ‘knew’ he would be really good.
The next morning, Naiya had Harry create a portal to her house in Magnolia Crescent. They needed to go out, and knew that the Order members would not allow him to. They left as soon as Vernon and
w:st=”on”>Dudley drove down the corner. Vernon was to leave his son at a friend’s house in
w:st=”on”>London and then go to work. The six of them passed through the portal to the sitting room, they got the pram and all the baby things needed for a day out. Petunia was the one to drive as they headed to obtain the children’s birth certificates.
The procedure caused uproar among the office personnel due to their age difference, and Naiya was threatened with charges of sexually abusing a minor, which she shrugged of. By the time they went through she would be dead. Afterwards the group went to the house on the outskirts of
w:st=”on”>London. It had belonged to a magical family, and though it was not big enough to be considered a Manor it was still much larger than number four Privet Drive. With his new knowledge Harry was able to check the wards that surrounded the house grounds, which were larger than he expected. There were so many layers of protection both wizard and Lubowen that the teen knew the house was much safer than the Dursleys. He would also be able to weave more defensive and protective wards based on the bond he had with the twins. In a few words the place was a fortress.
Trenton house, the name of the place, also came staffed with four house-elves plus Vina that was the twins’ personal house-elf and nanny. Naiya had lived there for a short while a couple of years ago. But the Lubowen decided to settle instead at the house in Magnolia Crescent -which was smaller- the previous summer. Still, the big house had all the muggle commodities as well as a nice blend of Lubowen and Wizard things. The later was added while she was expecting the children. Despite not wanting to deal with Naiya’s Will, Harry understood it put her naleame at ease to know that she was providing for the three of them even after she was gone. The teen would take full control of the inheritance on July 31st.
That day, Harry began to get to know his Aunt better and appreciate the changes she had undergone during the year; He could not say that he had forgiven her for all the years she, along with the rest of her family, had treated him like trash. But Petunia was making an effort to redeem herself. She had been very helpful and she had covered for him with
w:st=”on”>Vernon, even though they no longer were getting along.
It had taken Vernon a while to understand that she had asked for a divorce, and when he did, he had been furious and point blank refused to sign. He had gotten violent and that gave Petunia the ground for blackmailing him into signing. She did have to loose a lot of what would have been rightfully hers, but she really wanted to be as far away from him and take her nephew with her. In fact, she had been staying at Marge’s room for about three months now. Dudley would remain with
w:st=”on”>Vernon. Her son, unfortunately, was lost to her; and it was partly her own fault.
When they returned to Privet Drive, later that afternoon, they found the divorce papers Petunia had been waiting for. They had agreed that at least this summer she would be staying at Trenton House with Harry, as he needed all the support he could get not only with the children, but dealing with all that was happening to them. Harry changed his room’s portal from Magnolia Crescent to Trenton House, and proceeded to move his and his Aunt’s belongings there. The house-elves took care of Naiya’s and the babies things.
Naiya was worse come morning; she was too weak to leave the bed but she refused to just lay there and wait for the coma that would precede her death. There were still some things she needed to do, so she cajoled Harry into letting her stay in the sitting room by the fireplace. They then talked about the Order of the Phoenix, his ‘protectors’, and Hogwarts. The teen needed to inform the Order that neither his Aunt, nor him lived at Privet Drive anymore so they could stop guarding the house.
Harry also needed to speak with Albus Dumbledore and inform him of his changed status, and that provisions needed to be made for his children when term started. For humans the Daramy Ritual was the equivalent of a marriage. That automatically gave him several rights that a single teenager did not have, using magic during breaks for example. Naiya had investigated it while she was still undecided about telling him. For an added charge to his tuition Harry could request a small suite of rooms for himself and his family. It was the prerogative of married students. There had not been many in recent years, but they used to be quite a few in the old times when arranged marriages at an early age took place.
The teen was not too keen in talking with the Headmaster, but Naiya urged him to do so. They needed his help and cooperation if Harry wanted to keep his children close and safe, as well as get the time he needed to practice what he already knew. He agreed in the end and sent Hedwig with a letter for the Order members, it was only the report he had to write every three days, and a letter for Dumbledore informing him of the relocation and requesting a meeting to explain things.
With that done Naiya suggested that Harry, the twins and Petunia left on a shopping trip. He needed some better fitting clothes and she needed to talk to her talete in private to explain things. Harry was not happy about having to leave her when they had so little time left, but agreed to go simply because he knew it was important for her to speak with her brother in law and only remaining family connection. They were close even if they did not see each other all that frequently. As soon as they left Naiya took some floo powder and threw it to the fireplace.
“Potions Master’s Chambers, Hogwarts, Amaraya and Leof.” She called giving the location and the password, without it no one from outside the castle could fire call. “Severus, Sev are you there?” To her surprise he actually was, lying on his couch and reading a very thick tome she was sure dealt with potions.
“Naiya? It’s been long since your last call.” He sat up and placed the book on the table beside the couch.
“I know and I’m sorry, can you floo over? There are some important things I need to talk to you about, and I can’t do it by floo.”
“Of course, I don’t have anything to do today, just let me step through.” He did just that and found himself in an unfamiliar sitting room; with Naiya, slumped over a recliner looking the worse for wear. The moment he stepped out of the fireplace, the magical fire went out. “Are you all right? Because you really look like hell warmed over Nai,”
“Ah… always subtle Sev; and no I’m not alright my dear talete. I am dying and only have a few days at the most.”
“Dying? Don’t be ridiculous Nai
class=GramE>, you probably just caught a bad cold… Let me go back to Hogwarts and I’ll fix you a potion. Or better yet, do you have a potions room here?”
“Please sit Sev, there’s no potion that can cure me.” She had thought long and hard and decided that if she did not tell him the truth, he would find out on his own and it would be worse for Harry. Although she knew Severus would not refuse the family bonds, he already disliked her daramee. “My magical core was damaged…”
“There are potions that could have helped you Nai, why didn’t you tell me sooner I could have brewed them for you.”
“I know you would have, but the potions would have killed my children…”
“Who was the idiot that left you without completing the Ritual? I swear that I’ll kill him…” He raged. It was not fair, she was the only family he had left, the only memory of his beloved Amaraya and Leof; and
class=SpellE>Nai was dying because of some irresponsible wizard.
“It’s not his fault Sev, he did not leave willingly. In fact, he wanted to go through the Ritual, but I was the one that hesitated… by the time I decided he was taken away and I could not find him.”
“But he could have found you…”
“You know that he could not. If the Ritual’s second and third steps take longer than seven days you know he would forget. Although he is very powerful and knew there was something missing he could not remember what it was.”
“Why don’t you tell me then what happened? What made you hesitate?” he said with a resigned sigh. She was defending the idiot that was causing her death, and yet, he knew that whoever it was did not really have a choice about remembering if the Ritual was not finished.
“His age Sev, that’s what made me hesitate. His was actually very mature for a fourteen year old…”
“Are you out of your mind woman? You robbed the cradle, even Amaraya waited until I was of age before approaching me… Whoever he is, is just a child!”
“I know, and I know I should have waited… he was so innocent, so… naïve. But I could not wait Sev, I made mistake after mistake until he was taken away from me. I had promised I would wait until he was older and had finished growing and he agreed. He was starved for affection and the support of a family. His own -despite what most people believe- was abusive and neglectful. At the time I wanted to press charges when I found out, he was bruised and slightly battered, but he is an orphan and they were the only living relatives that he has. Besides that there is protective magic on his house and he needed to stay with his aunt…”
“Potter! Naiya of all the boys in the world you had to go and pick that spoiled and arrogant brat! You are dying because of him!”
“Were you not hearing a word I said Severus? He has never been spoiled! His childhood has much more in common with yours than his father’s. Tell me how can a child with no self-esteem ever be arrogant? Most of what you see is an act, what is expected of ‘the-boy-who-lived’, but not the real Harry.” She snarled, this was why she did not want Harry home, Severus would not see reason if he had found Harry Potter there.
“Surely you’re exaggerating; Dumbledore would have never left his Golden Boy in an abusive home. He probably told you a lot of lies…” He toned down his response seeing as she was not looking too good.
“Dumbledore just dumped the boy there and never checked up on him. About the abuse and the neglect, I saw the results and healed them. I later made friends with his Aunt, and she told me how they treated him. She will tell you under Veritasserum and the Water of Truth. I learned after the transfer exactly just how bad your relationship with him is. So I asked Petunia to do this for me, and she agreed. You would never reconsider your views on my Daramee otherwise.”
class=SpellE>Nai, I just can’t believe what you’re telling me. He is a Potter and…”
“Was he raised by Potters Severus?”
“Of course not, he’s…” he stopped realizing his logical arguments were completely flawed.
“No, he was not raised by Potters, simply because he is or rather was the only Potter left. For crying out loud Severus, his father died when he was barely one year old! Harry does not remember him at all, except when Dementors are close, and then he only hears him telling his wife to take Harry and run. Petunia and her husband hated magic with a passion, we found out Pet was a witch and that helped her change. But Vernon Dursley still hates it. They called Harry a freak and he believed that was his name until he attended pre-school and found out, that it wasn’t. He now knows what ‘freak’ means and yet he still believes that he is one.”
“But why didn’t he tell anyone when he started Hogwarts.”
“Would you have told anyone about your father when you started school?” She countered, knowing the answer but needing him to say it aloud. Severus needed to realize that his childhood was not all that different from the one the son of his nemesis had.
“Of course not, people would have believed I was a weakling, a cry baby and to top it off Cadmus would have killed me as soon as he heard.”
“There, you have your answer now; his uncle would have done the same. The-boy-who-lived can’t be seen as weak. He is the saviour of the wizarding world, it didn’t matter that he only found out about it the day he boarded the Hogwarts Express.”
It was hard for Severus to change his views on the boy, the one he always believed to be a carbon copy of James Potter, his arch-nemesis. But Naiya’s arguments were irrefutable, and the fact that Potter’s Aunt was willing to tell him about her nephew’s life under Veritasserum and the Lubowen version of it was enough to tell him that he should indeed reconsider his views on the idiot boy. Who now it seemed was related to him, through Lubowen customs.
“You did not tell me if you got around to finish the Ritual with Potter,” he asked changing the subject.
“I did… I was tempted not to, but these are dire times for the wizarding world, and him in particular. He needed the power he received through the Daramy, but most of all he needed a reason to fight and live for Severus. After his Godfather died,” Severus could not help but growl at the name. “He had nothing to look forward to.”
“Whatever I thought of the idiot boy, I know Potter is not foolish enough to commit suicide Nai.”
“No he wouldn’t kill himself. His sense of duty is too strong. But tell me how he can be expected to fight and defeat Voldemort…”
“Don’t say his name!” He snapped at her; more out of habit that because he was angry with her.
“When he has no will to win?” she decided to ignore his small outburst and went on. “He has Rhiannon and Kheelan, Petunia is trying to patch their relationship and hopefully you will become part of the family. Harry is no longer alone, even when I leave, he will still have a family to support him; and he really needs that support to pull through.”
“I was told… and I could see at Hogwarts, that Black’s death affected him. He was too quiet… too subdued.” He reluctantly observed what he had not wanted to see.
“You were probably noticing a bit of the real Harry peeking through his masks. He actually is very quiet and very shy, being boisterous is not his nature, but he can pull it off most of the time. It is expected of ‘the-boy-who-lived’ after all. With the man’s death it was hard for him to keep the masks on.”
“I don’t know Naiya, what you tell me is completely at odds with what I knew…”
“What you thought you knew Sev, admit it, you never really saw Harry Potter. You saw James Potter back from the dead to haunt you through his son. You did not want to see that the children are not their parents. As you should know; you are not Cadmus after all, you’re your own person.”
“What do you want me to do Nai?” He asked instead. She was right of course, as always, but that did not mean he was going to admit it.
“He has the knowledge now Sev, but he needs a mentor and a family -just as you do. I still have the hope that having a niece, a nephews and a ‘brother’ through the filial bonds in the Daramy Ritual, might help you heal from the loss of Amaraya and Leof. It’s been seventeen years Severus; you’re still young to find another mate, have more children.”
class=SpellE>Nai, you are asking more than I can give, and I don’t mean Potter and the twins. We’ve discussed this before. Lubowen might not mate for life, but I believe I did. Amaraya was my mate, and she gave me a beautiful gift in my son. You know I loved them more than life, but now the both of them are dead; my sole purpose in life is to avenge them… to make sure their murderers pay. The one who killed them is dead by my own hand. Not listening to my warning was the last thing Cadmus Snape did. He should have followed his instincts and killed me. He chose instead to obey the Dark Lord, and he too will pay for ordering their deaths. That is why I spy on him and bid my time.”
“This is what I mean; you can’t just live for revenge. What will happen when you get it? What will you do with yourself?” she was concerned for him, afraid he might do something foolish, like committing suicide once Voldemort was gone.
“Then I’ll finally be able to have peace and join my Daram and child.” He stated in a soft voice that had some hints of wishful-ness.
“That’s not what she would have wanted for you Severus. Amaraya loved you as much as you still love her. You were barely a boy when she…”
“I was nineteen Nai, almost twenty when
class=SpellE>Cadmus killed them. I was more than old enough to have a family, but I was not good enough to protect them.”
“It wasn’t your fault… You know it was important that the Dark Lord do not find about us, and she could not pass for a pureblood. The only logical explanation for her use of magic was if they believed her a muggle born. She knew the risks of that when she chose you Severus. Amaraya knew you would have to join the Death Eaters or die on your seventeenth birthday. There has not been anyone with your talent for potions in about a century, and she was one of the best Potions Mistresses my people ever had. She always said you’d surpass her one day. So of course that madman would do anything to secure your services, especially when you were the son and heir of one of his most loyal followers.”
“But they would not be dead if I had been able to stand up to Cadmus…”
